In 1968 Chicago, young college student Susan takes a step outside her normal, sheltered life to help a desperate friend find a safe but illegal abortion. Susan and her more radical dormmate Janice form a friendship as they start providing the doctor's number to other desperate women -- until the doctor angrily refuses to help them. Instead of giving up, the young women decide to think bigger. Susan and her friends form the Jane Collective: a secret organization to help other women obtain safe abortions by connecting them with doctors who will provide the service safely and at low cost. Susan sacrifices her career plans, her boyfriend, and even her relationship with her mother in the name of helping women in need. When the women of Jane are eventually arrested, they face the ultimate test of their commitment to the cause and to each other
